Women's Track and Field Downs Middlebury and Bowdoin

Springfield, Mass. -- April 9, 2011 -- The Springfield College women’s track and field team won its first home meet of the outdoor season at Blake Track on Saturday afternoon, defeating Middlebury and Bowdoin in a three-team meet. Springfield took first with 141.5 points, followed by Middlebury at 135.5 and Bowdoin at 126.

Sophomore Crystal Davis was the top performer for the Pride women in the track events, placing first in the 100 meter dash and contributing to the 4x100 meter relay team that also took first place. Davis ran a 12.87 in the 100 for the win, while in the 4x100 meter relay Laurie Jenkins, Kelly Murphy, and Erika Marks joined Davis to win the event in 49.00.

In the 3000 meter steeplechase, Alex Mustardo contributed points with a first-place finish, running a time of 12:47.24. The Pride was also helped by senior Amanda Mullen, who took third in the event with a time of 13:43.36.

In the 4x400 meter relay Springfield was victorious once again as a group. The foursome of Joy Jennifer, Gabriella Gaudreault, Murphy, and Kathryn Schumann finished with a time of 4:02.39 for an easy victory.

Others that ran well for Springfield included Marks in the 100 meter, where she earned a third place finish with a time of 12.87, while Jenkins also contributed in the 200 meter dash, taking second place in 25.93 . Before anchoring the 4x400 meter relay team, Gaudreault ran well in the individual 400 meter event, taking third with a time of 59.78. Jenn Kapinos contributed points in the 800 meter run, finishing third and clocking in at 2:19.34. Lastly, in the 400 meter hurdles, Bethany Young finished in second place, recording a time of 1:06.83.

In the field events, the Pride women earned three first place finishes. In the pole vault, Rhian Duggan took first with a height of 3.14 meters. Over in the shot put circle, Springfield freshman Amber Judge got in on the scoring with a heave of 11.06 meters for the event win. Colleen Brague threw the javelin well enough to take first place, finishing with a distance of 37 meters.

Others that performed well for the Pride women included Kelly Curtis. She leapt to a height of 1.58 meters for second place in the high jump. She also contributed in the javelin throw, earning the third place points with a toss of 35.24 meters. In the triple jump, Springfield took both second and third place, with Samantha Artz jumping 10.17 meters for second and Shannon Park totaling 9.98 meters for third. Michele Angelo chipped in with a third place finish in the shot put, throwing 10.49 meters. In the hammer throw event, Brague took second place with a distance of 35.49 meters and Angelo took third at 34.89 meters.

The Pride women will be back home at Blake Track next Saturday to host the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and WPI.
