Youth Anchors Men's Swimming and Diving Success in Upcoming Season
A very talented sophomore class and several newcomers that should have an immediate impact lead a young Springfield men’s swimming and diving team. The Pride will look to improve on its third-place finish at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship last winter.
“Leadership will be paramount this coming year,” said coach John Taffe
. “The sophomore class will be asked to carry a heavy load this year, while several freshmen will be asked to fill important roles. We have strengthened ourselves in many areas and did not suffer from a large graduating class. The team has great leadership which should help our younger athletes grow and develop into solid student- athletes.”
Sophomore Louis Arruda
was named the NEWMAC swimmer of the year in 2002 after winning the 200- and 500-yard freestyles and the 200-yard butterfly at the conference championship. He shattered two meet records and recorded a pair of NCAA Division III Championship provisional qualifying times in the process.
Four other sophmores, Tim Ryan, Blake Leshnick, Jeff Doornweerd
and Erik Arvidson
were conference finalists in 2002 and will carry much of the load this season.
Newcomers that will make an immediate impression are Dan Moran
in the long distance events as well as butterfly, Ross Craig
in I.M. and butterfly, Adrian Eagles
in breaststroke and Massachusetts state diving runner-up Mike Shaw
Senior Craig Dolan
will look to rebound after a year filled with injuries, while conference three-meter dive champion Dan Bartholomew
also returns for his senior campaign
