Football Hits The Road For Clash With Mount Ida

Brodie Quinn Springfield, Mass. – September 19, 2013 – The Springfield College football team looks to improve to 3-0 this as it will travel to Mount Ida College on Saturday after earning wins over Western New England and Husson. The non-conference clash is set for a 1 p.m. start.

Last week…

The Pride’s most recent win came over Husson last week, a 36-0 shutout, in Springfield's home opener.

For his performance in the win, Danny Macalena (Congers, N.Y.) was tabbed the Liberty League Football Defensive Player of the Week. The junior had a standout game as the Pride posted its first shutout since 2010. The linebacker made a team-best 10 tackles, including four tackles-for-loss that resulted in 15 yards, to go along with a forced fumble.

Jonathan Marrero (Boston, Mass.) led Springfield with 122 yards on the ground, while Louis Fenaroli (Newtown, Conn.) found the end zone three times after carrying the ball 21 times for 92 yards. As a team, the Pride totaled 396 yards on the ground on 67 rushing attempts.

A season ago…

Last year, the Pride beat Mount Ida, 49-42 in a non-conference shootout. The game was tied 28-all after one half, but Mount Ida opened the second half with consecutive touchdowns to take the lead.

After Springfield found itself down 42-28 in the third quarter, Mike Davis scored three touchdowns in a 6:01 span to lead the Pride to a thrill come-from-behind win. In the contest, the Mustangs held the ball for nearly 17 minutes more than the Pride and outgained the hosts, 526-407.

All-time series vs. Mount Ida…

Springfield has never lost to Mount Ida, with an all-time series record of 4-0. The Pride has won by an average of about 16 points in four meetings with the Mustangs. The biggest win, a 27-point victory came in 2009, while the teams also met in a 2010 ECAC Championship Bowl game.

About Mount Ida…

The Mustangs are 1-1 on the season, coming off a 37-26 loss to Plymouth State in their home opener last week. Mount Ida came back from a 13-point deficit to tie the game at 20 in the third quarter, but Plymouth State’s ground game proved to be the difference down the stretch.

Mount Ida was led by junior quarterback Jawad Yatim, who threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns. Jordan Hyman had eight receptions for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

Mount Ida opened the season with a 21-20 win over UMass Dartmouth.
