Burrell and Carlson Named New England Football Writers Division II/III All-Stars Boston, Mass. - November 20, 2009 - Jarred Burrell and John Carlson were among 31 players representing 20 different teams who have been named to the 2009 New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England team.

Burrell, a product of Pilgrim, R.I., was picked as the top return man in New England as he was named the team's return specialist. An Empire 8 First Team selection as both a defensive back and as a return specialist, Burrell enters this Saturday's ECAC Northeast Bowl Championship game versus Plymouth State ranked second in Division III in punt returns (17.2 yards per return) and third in Division III in kick returns (32.3 yards per return). This season, Burrell has returned both a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns.

Carlson was named to the All-New England team after a successful season on Springfield's offensive line. At left tackle, the Cromwell, Conn. product used his 6-4 frame to help bolster the Pride's running game, which is currently ranked second nationally in rushing offense with 353.9 yards per game. Carlson was also named an Empire 8 All-Conference Honorable Mention selection.

The All-New England team is comprised of the top players from Division II and Division III institutions in the region. Bentley College leads the team with four selections, while New England Small College Athletic Conference champion Amherst College has three picks, as does Northeast – 10 champion Merrimack College. Westfield State College, Norwich University, Assumption College, and Springfield College each placed two players on the team.

Also named to the squad were players from American International College, Bates College, Bowdoin College, Bridgewater State College, Curry College, Endicott College, Maine Maritime Academy, MIT, Middlebury College, Plymouth State University, Southern Connecticut State University, and St. Anselm College.

The Division II Northeast-10 Conference had 12 players selected, while from Division III the New England Football Conference had eight picks. The New England Small College Athletic Conference had six representatives, while the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference, in its first year of existence, had three selections. Two players came from independent institutions.

The team will be honored at the New England football Writers Banquet on Thursday, December 10 at Casa di Fior in Wilmington, Mass.
