Springfield College to Host Symposium on Girls and Women in Sports This Weekend

Women's 50th Anniversary of Varsity Athletics Springfield, Mass. - October 24, 2013 - This upcoming academic year will serve as a back drop for the celebration of 50 years of women's varsity athletics at Springfield College. Throughout the first and second semester, a series of programs and activities will be woven into the fabric of co- curricular life.

We look forward to honoring and and thanking those women whose wisdom, time, dedication and persistence made an impact on girls and women in sport on an international stage.

Friday, October 25

10:00 - 10:15 am - Welcome by Springfield College President Dr. Mary-Beth Cooper

10:15 - 10:45 am - Opening Key Note: Revolution, Evolution and Solutions
Phyllis Lerner '71, Faculty Associate for Johns Hopkins University Graduate School of Education. Phyllis has dedicated her career to gender equity issues, Title IX compliance, athletics and curriculum development.

11:00 - 12:00 pm- Breakout Session 1
History and Evolution of Women's Athletics at Springfield College

Presented by 1989-90 Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics Diane Potter, EdD, '57, G'63, and Kathy Mangano, EdD, '86, G'88. Moderated by Professor of Physical Education and 2007-08 Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics Mimi Murray, PhD, '61, G'68.

Saturday, October 26

10:00 - 11:30 am - Closing Keynote Presentation: Female Sport Participation: An Antidote to our Sexist Media Culture
Presented by Donna A. Lopiano, PhD, president of Sports Management Resources and former CEO of the Women's Sports Foundation. This talk will be an exploration of the messages that media culture sends to females and the importance of sports participation in counteracting objectification and dependence, along with the other roles sport participation plays in the lives of women.
