Springfield College Field Hockey Box Score

Babson Park, Mass. - September 29, 2012 - The Springfield College field hockey team fell to host Babson College, 5-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

Babson has now won five straight games to move to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in NEWMAC play. With the loss, Springfield drops to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Julia Pochini and sophomore forward Caroline Malone each scored twice and senior forward Kelly Walsh registered a career-high four assists for the Beavers.

Junior Morgan Lockwood also scored for the Beavers, who tallied three times midway through the first half in a span of 6:02 to take control of the game.

Pochini opened the scoring with the first goal of her career at the 14:01 mark, taking a pass from Walsh following a scramble in front of the net to beat Springfield first-year goalkeeper Timarie Villa for a 1-0 lead. Lockwood scored her team-leading 13th just four minutes later, again from Walsh, to give the Beavers a two-goal lead, and Malone followed with her first of the day just under two minutes later to push the lead to 3-0 just 20:03 into the game.

Malone opened the second half by scoring her eighth goal of the season, tucking her shot inside the left post off a cross from Walsh. Pochini capped the scoring for the Beavers at 55:57 when she hit a blast from just inside the circle following a penalty corner.

Springfield’s best chance of the afternoon came with just under 20 minutes remaining as junior Kelly Gallo made a long run down the left side of the field before Babson goalkeeper Kayla Florence came of her line to force Gallo’s scoring attempt go wide.

Florence, who played the first 56:39, and first-year Kayla Costa combined to make one stop to earn the shutout. Villa made six saves for the Pride.

The Pride will return home after a three-game road swing on Tuesday when it hosts Wheaton beginning at 7:00 pm.
