SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 18, 2003- Springfield College senior Adam Hughes (Bridgewater, Conn.) finished first in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.26) and the 400-meter hurdles (54.54) tonight at the Vern Cox Track and Field Invitational at Springfield College’s Blake Track.

The meet, which was non-team scoring, is named after legendary Springfield College coach Vern Cox, who coached the men’s track and field team from 1955 to 1976.

Hughes was one of four SC runners who won events. Senior Jon Notary (Bethlehem, Pa.) placed first in the 400 meters (49.41), and senior Vinnie Mazzaferro (Brimfield, Mass.) won the 100 meters (11.46) and 200 meters (22.79). Junior Brian Pearsall (Fairport, N.Y.) was a winner in the 800 meters (1:57.46).

In the field events, sophomore All-American Blake Gulino (Old Saybrook, Conn.) won the long jump (6.85 meters); senior Michael Heitkamp (Orwell, Vt.) finished first in the high jump (1.94 meters), and Rick Dickinson won the pole vault (3.59 meters).
