SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 22, 2006 - Springfield College sophomore left-hander Joe Carlos (Hampden, Mass.) pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-hit baseball, allowing just one run, but it was the one run which was the difference as Western New England College edged the Pride, 1-0, in non-conference action this afternoon at chilly Trelease Park.
WNEC junior first baseman Tom Horgan knocked in the only run of the game with a one-out single in the seventh inning as the Golden Bears, playing in their home-opener, improved to 7-3 with their third-straight victory.
Sophomore second baseman Ryan Kravontka went 2-for-3 for WNEC, including a double off the right field fence before Horgan’s game-winning hit off freshman relief pitcher Jimmy Lisowski (Warwick, MA).
Sophomore Chris Anderson went the first seven innings for Western New England College, allowing only three hits with six strikeouts and two walks to win his first game of the season. He is now 1-1. Senior Jason Connelly struck out one and gave up no hits in two innings of relief to pick up the save.
SC senior center fielder Scott Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead the Pride. Sophomore right fielder Rex Cone (Bristol, Conn.) had nine putouts for the Pride, which falls to 4-4 on the season.
SC will next host the Coast Guard Academy in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, March 25, in a 12:00 p.m. start in the Pride's home-opener. SC will then host UMass-Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon, March 26, in a 1:00 p.m. start.
