No. 1 Eastern Connecticut Holds Off Baseball, 9-6
Box score/Play-by-play
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 18, 2003- Springfield College freshman third baseman
Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) collected three hits and scored three times but top-ranked Eastern Connecticut State defeated the Pride, 9-6, in a non-conference game this afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.
Yvon upped his batting average to .450 in five starts since breaking into the starting line-up against MIT on April 13.
ECSU senior outfielder Dan Silva went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two run batted in, and sophomore shortstop Tom Koch added three hits and scored twice.
The Warriors scored three times in the second inning, thanks in part to junior Eugene Julien’s two-run single. SC answered with two in the bottom of the frame, including sophomore rightfielder
John Beattie's (Longmeadow, Mass.) third home run.
In the fourth, the Warriors scored four times to make it 7-2. In the bottom of the fourth, junior shortstop
Toby Cole (Blue Hill, Maine) doubled home Yvon, who led off with a single. After ECSU added another run in the fifth, Yvon opened the bottom of the frame by drilling a single to left center and scoring on an error two batters later.
Trailing 9-4 in the eighth, Yvon reached on an error, and scored on junior second baseman
Dan Samia’s (North Adams, Mass.) double. Samia moved to third on a passed ball, and Cole walked to put runners at the corners. ESCU junior right-hander Tom Spirito came on and got out of the jam, allowing one run to score and forcing an inning ending double play.
