#14 Field Hockey Eases Past Mount Holyoke, 4-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 16, 2007) – Brittany Veazie scored two goals and Eileen Jenkins added a goal and an assist to lead the Springfield College field hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Mount Holyoke College this evening in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game played at the Pride’s Stagg Field.

With the win, Springfield, ranked #14 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll released earlier today, is now 13-3 overall on the season, 5-2 in the conference. It was Springfield’s seventh win in its last eight games. Meanwhile, Mount Holyoke is now 6-7 overall, 3-3 in league play.

Sophomore midfielder Morgan Rein (Mystic, Conn.) of Springfield tallied the game’s first goal 9:55 into the first half. Her goal was assisted by junior midfielder Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.).

The Pride was destined to score twice more in the first stanza. Veazie, a senior midfielder from Dexter, Me., scored the first of two goals in a span of 44 seconds. She tallied with 11:36 left in the half, assisted by Jenkins, a senior forward from Gorham, Me. Then with 10:52 left, Jenkins scored unassisted.

Freshman forward Siobhan Anderson (Newcastle, Me.) slowed the Pride’s momentum when she scored the Lyons’ only goal of the contest with 23:54 left in the game, making it 3-1. Anderson’s goal was unassisted.

But Veazie finished up by counting one more marker, unassisted, with 7:01 left in the game.

For the Pride, senior goalkeeper Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) did not register a save in 70 minutes of action. For Mount Holyoke, junior GK Allie Walsh (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was credited with 7 saves in 35 minutes of action (first half). Freshman GK Caitlin Sullivan-Gregory (Boxford, Mass.) registered 10 saves in the second half.

Springfield will next play Saturday (Oct. 20) at home versus Wellesley at 10:30 am. Mount Holyoke will next play at Wheaton Saturday at 1:00 pm.
