



It is the first time in at least 26 years that the Springfield men’s gymnastics team has beaten Army. Army had beaten Springfield twice in earlier meets this season.
Two Springfield gymnasts placed first today. Senior Matthew Davis (Southboro, Mass.) won his specialty, the pommel horse, with a score of 14.700. And junior Matthew Bolognese (Stony Brook, N.Y.) won his specialty, the still rings, with a score of 15.200. Sophomore Josh Spencer (Las Vegas, Nev.) finished second in the high bar (14.200), fourth in the vault (15.150), and tied for fifth in the pommel horse (13.400). Sophomore Matt Tocchio (Braintree, Mass.) had an excellent day, finishing second in the pommel horse (14.400), third in the parallel bars (13.850), and in a tie for third in the floor exercise (14.350). Sophomore Keith Stumpf (Williamsville, N.Y.) shined in both the vault, where he is an All-American, by tying for second with the day’s second-highest score (15.500), and by tying for third in the floor exercise (14.350). Senior JJ Ferreira (Naugatuck, Conn.) placed second in the floor (14.450), and junior Andy Kelly (Marstons Mills, Mass.) was second in the parallel bars (14.000). Kelly was also fifth in floor (14.250).
For Army, senior Mike Assenmacher (Milford, Mich.) had a fine day, placing first twice. He won the floor exercise with a tally of 14.950, and the vault with the day’s highest individual score of 15.650. Assenmacher also finished fourth in the pommel horse (13.450), and fifth in both the parallel bars (13.700) and the high bar (13.950). He finished sixth overall in the all-around ((71.700). Army also claimed two more winners – sophomore Jon Grey (Huntington Beach, Calif.) in the parallel bars (14.050) and senior Tim Burns (Ann Arbor, Mich.) in the high bar (14.800). Sophomore Ty Smith (Wales, Wisc.) had Army’s highest All-Around score, finishing second at 82.400.
For MIT, junior Boris Rasin (Brookline, Mass.) finished first in the All-Around (82.850). In fact, MIT placed 1-3-4-5 in the All-Around, including senior Joshua Coblenz (Springfield, Va.) in third, freshman Jake Shapiro (Canton, Mass.) in fourth, and junior Tom Caldwell (East Berlin, Pa.) in fifth. Rasin also took second in the still rings (14.400), and third in the pommel horse (14.000).
Up next, Springfield will compete in the New England’s at MIT this Saturday (March 22.). On March 28-29, Springfield will host the USAG Nationals right back at Blake Arena.
