SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- September 29, 2007 -- The Springfield College women's soccer team tallied three goals in the opening 7:48 of the match en route to a 10-0 win against Coast Guard in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Pride, which have now won five in a row, improves to 9-1, 2-0 in league play, while Coast Guard drops to 1-7, 0-2.
Nicole Hanewich (Cumberland, R.I) opened up the scoring 1:05 into the match when Lauren Peltier (Agawam, Mass.) slipped a ball through the Bears' defense, then which Hanewich fired past keeper Trish Ohle. Hanewich found Catlin Sawczuk (Plainville, Conn.) alone on the left side of the field just over four minutes later and Sawczuk lofted a ball into the back of the net. Sawczuk then followed up her own shot that was saved by Ohle at the 7:48 mark and blasted in the loose ball in front of the goal for the Pride's third tally. Springfield went on to tally two more goals in the first half, as Hanewich found the back of the net once again and Delany Cantrall (Santa Paula, Calif.) converted on a penalty kick.
In the second stanza, plenty of new faces recorded goals for the Pride as Rory Pogmore (Lebanon, Conn.), Brittany Collins (South Windsor, Conn.), Kristen Stewart (Durham, Conn.), and Jen Courossi (Methuen, Mass.), each tallied goals.
Earning her first collegiate start, Katie Delude (Chicopee, Mass.) earned the win as she and Lindsay Volk (Hinesburg, Vt.) registered the shutout. The Pride outshot the Bears, 37-2, in the game, including a 22-0 advantage in the first half.
Springfield returns to action when it plays a pivotal NEWMAC match against rival-Wheaton on Tuesday afternoon. Kick-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
