Aguadilla, Puerto Rico -- March 15, 2009 -- Amy Shaw won her match at No. 1 singles, but her Springfield College women's tennis team lost its opening match of its trip to Puerto Rico -- to the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, 7-2 -- earlier today. As this match was not played against a four-year U.S. college institution, it does not count in Springfield's won-loss column. This was Springfield's first women's tennis match of any kind since October 14.
Springfield found itself trailing 3-0 after doubles play.
But SC did win two singles matches. Shaw, a sophomore from Walpole, Mass., defeated Natalia Ramos in a third-set super-tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-5 (10-7) at No. 1 singles. At No. 5 singles, sophomore Kristi Maltz (Cranston, R.I.) defeated Darilyn Garcia, also in a third-set super-tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6 (11-9).
