NCAA BOUND - Women's Volleyball Earns At-Large Bid To NCAA Championship

Women's Volleyball Earns At-Large Berth Into NCAA Tournament Springfield, Mass. - November 8, 2010 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship on Monday morning as 63-team field was announced. Springfield, which was previously selected as the host site for the regional championship earlier last week, will take on Tufts at 8:00 pm on Friday evening.

There was plenty of tension as Springfield was unsure if it would earn a bid into the tournament after losing in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Championship in four sets to Coast Guard on Sunday afternoon. However, the Pride, which was ranked no lower than third throughout the season in the regional polls, had put together enough of a resume to earn a chance to play for the national championship.

"This is one of the finest teams I have ever had at Springfield and this has been our goal all season," said head coach Joel Dearing. "We are looking forward to competing for the regional championship and it will be very exciting to play in front of our home crowd this weekend."

In addition to fifth-seeded Springfield (29-4) and fourth-seeded Tufts (22-10) squaring off , third-seeded Middlebury (24-5) will play sixth-seeded NYU-Polytechnic (20-19), top-seeded Amherst (24-3) will take on eighth-seeded Lesley (20-9) and second-seeded UMass Boston (27-4) will challenge seventh-seeded Maine Maritime (18-9) on Friday at Springfield. The regional winner advances to the national quarterfinals at the Washington University Field House in St. Louis Nov. 19-21.

This is Springfield's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2008 and the seventh time overall under Dearing. It is also the first time in Dearing's tenure that his squad has received an at-large berth in the national tournament.
