Springfield, Mass. -- September 28, 2010 -- Despite taking a loss last Saturday, the Springfield College football team still made a very strong showing in the latest New England Division III College Football coaches poll, released Monday. The Pride, now 3-1, fell just one spot to No. 2, trailing only unbeaten Amherst College, the defending NESCAC champion.The Lord Jeffs, now 1-0, took over the number one spot, nabbing 12 of the 22 first-place votes, and totalling 199 points.
After being voted No. 1 the first week of the poll, Springfield is now No. 2 with 186 total points. The Pride, whose only loss was to then-No. 23-ranked (nationally) Alfred on a tie-breaking touchdown with 38 seconds to go, grabbed five first-place votes.
Curry College (3-1) moved up from No. 5 to No. 3 with 114 points and four first-place votes. Trinity (1-0) rose two spots from No. 6 to No. 4 with 113 points. And Williams (1-0) moved up from No. 7 to No. 5 with 105 points and the remaining first-place vote.
In 6th through 10th are: WPI (3-1) with 68 points, Framingham State (3-1) with 66 points, Endicott (3-1) with 61 points, Maine Maritime (2-1) with 46 points, and Plymouth State (3-1) with 45 points.
Also receiving votes are: Norwich (34), Middlebury (26), Mount Ida (23), Tufts (13), and Worcester State (12).
Springfield will next play the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (1-3) of Kings Point, New York this Saturday at SC's Amos Alonzo Stagg Field at 4 pm.
Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 32nd season as a head football coach in the fall of 2013. He enters his 30th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
