Bristol, R.I. - January 5, 2012 - The Springfield College wrestling team captured the Scott Viera Invitational on Saturday at Roger Williams University after totaling 175.5 points. The Pride benefited from five individual championships.
Behind the Pride, host Roger Williams placed second with 126 points. Williams (95), STCC (65), and Plymouth State (58) all placed in the top five. AIC (49), Johnson and Wales (46), and Western New England (25) rounded out the team scoring.
Tyler Keane had a breakout performance for the Pride at 125, winning the weight class as he recorded a pin and two major decisions, including one over teammate Tommy Casper in the title bout. At 141, Joe Grippi cruised to the individual title, as the nation's third-ranked wrestler at the weight class posted a pair of pins on the afternoon.
Top-seeded Derrick Longo handled the competition at 165, registering two victories by pins, to win his weight classification. At 174, Mike Fish was the top seed and had a strong showing, winning four bouts en route to the title.
Springfield's fifth individual title came at 285, with John Gabordi capturing three matches, two by pin.
Devin Biscaha was the runner-up at 157, while Dylan Foley and Jeremy Burns each had strong showings, placing third at 149 and 197, respectively.
