The two were named as they contributed greatly to SC's 20-16 victory over Utica College last Saturday at SC's Amos Alonzo Stagg Field.
Ramos, a junior strong safety from Milford, Conn., totalled a team-high 13 tackles, including nine solos and 2.5 tackles-for-loss for seven yards. He also had a forced fumble. The SC defense held the potent Utica attack to 27 points below its 43.0 points per game aggregate entering the game.
As for Safer, the junior from St. Johns, Fla. only touched the ball twice on special teams on Saturday, but he twice had long kickoff returns, both coming in the third quarter. Safer returned the opening second-half kickoff 45 yards. Later, just after Utica had tied the score at 7-all, he returned the ensuing kickoff 54 yards. That second kickoff return set up a go-ahead TD for the Pride towards third quarter's end. Safer averaged 49.5 yards per return. He also carried the ball four times for 30 yards, averaging 7.5 yards per carry.
SC has now had a total of six Empire 8 Players of the Week this season. They include senior inside linebacker Ken Goodwin (Foxboro, Mass.) twice on defense, senior DT Chris Kulcsar (Haworth, N.J.) on defense, Ramos, sophomore placekicker Ricky Peacock (Tucker, Ga.) on special teams, and Safer. That's a total of six Empire 8 Players of the Week in a possible six weeks.
This Saturday (Oct. 23), Springfield (5-1) will play at Empire 8 foe Ithaca College (4-2) at 1 pm.
