Rogers Named ECAC Division III Field Hockey Co-Player Of The Year
Springfield Mass., Nov. 30, 2001 - Springfield College seniors
Melissa Rogers was named the 2001 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Co-Player of the Year and joined senior midfielder
Caroline Black as an ECAC First-Team All-Star.
Rogers, a native of
Southwick, Mass., also earned first-team All-America honors after being named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year. She tied for first in Division III in goals scored (28) while finishing second in points (62). Rogers, who scored two-or-more goals eight times this season, also scored eight game-winning goals, including the Pride's lone tally in a 1-0 win over Wellesley College in the ECAC Division III New England Championship. This year's team captain, Rogers is the second all-time leading scorer in Springfield history with 128 points (59 goals, 10 assists). Rogers shared the award with SUNY Cortland senior forward
Julie Gentner.
Black, who hails from
Paget, Bermuda, finished third on the team with 18 points (six goals, six assists) and solidified a midfield that held opponents to 1.2 goals per game. Also a second-team All-America selection this season, she scored three game-winning goals on the season, including one in the Pride's defeat of Hartwick (N.Y.) College, 4-1, to win the Springfield College Invitational (Sept. 2).
Springfield was ranked No. 14 in the final NFHCA Division III poll. The Pride finished with a 19-7 record and won the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament Championship.
