No. 12 Men's Lacrosse Wins Pilgrim League Championship, 8-7, Over WNEC
, May 7, 2005 – Springfield College sophomore goalie Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.)
made 13 saves to lead the No. 12 Pride to a 8-7 victory over Western New England College in the championship game of the Pilgrim League Tournament this afternoon on Benedum Field. The win gives SC its fifth league title and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament in the last six years.
Senior midfielder Craig Gibson (South Salem, N.Y.)
and senior attackman Adam Cost (Camillus, N.Y.)
each tallied a goal and two assists for the Pride, which was making its sixth-straight appearance in the Pilgrim League Championship game. This also marked the fourth-consecutive season the Pride faced the Golden Bears in the league final.
A goal by senior midfielder Mark Maitland (Salem, Mass.)
at 14:37 followed by a tally by senior midfielder Derek Pedrick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.)
gave the Pride (12-4) a quick 2-0 lead at 13:06 for the only scoring of the first quarter.
SC was penalized for an illegal stick to start the second quarter, giving WNEC (12-6) a man advantage for the first three minutes of the period. A goal by sophomore attackman Adam Cherry (Westfield, Mass.) put the Golden Bears on the board at 13:20, but three Cloutier saves, and a short-handed goal by junior midfielder Kevin Lynch (Milton, Mass.)
at 13:12, kept SC in the lead during the three-minute un-releasable penalty. Lynch also finished the day winning 9-of-13 face-offs for the Pride
WNEC would finish the quarter on a 2-1 run, including goals by freshman attackman Bryan Cofrin (Derry, N.H.) and freshman Brody Savoie (Wilbraham, Mass.) as SC clung to a 4-3 lead at halftime.
Senior midfielder Kevin Warnock (Somers, Conn.)
tallied the first of his two goals on the day to give SC a 5-3 advantage with 13:02 to play in the third quarter. WNEC would add its only goal of the quarter with 38 seconds remaining on a tally by senior attackman C.J. Annunciata (Waltham, Mass.) to trail by one goal, 5-4, after 45 minutes of play.
Cherry’s 50th goal of the season tied the game, 5-5, at 12:03, before Pride goals by Warnock at 11:05 and Gibson at 7:13, gave SC a 7-5 cushion. Senior midfielder Pat Matthews' (Middle Island, N.Y.) tally pulled WNEC to within a goal, 7-6, with 6:31 remaining.
A man-up goal by Cost put the Pride back up by two, 8-6, with 5:57 to play, before freshman Kelley Luchs (Glastonbury, Conn.) brought the Golden Bears back within one with 1:09 on the clock. SC held on for its 12-straight victory of the season.
Pairings for the upcoming NCAA Division III Tournament will be announced Sunday (May 8) evening at 9:00 p.m. This is the first time in SC history both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in the same season. The Pride women won its second New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference title in four years last Saturday with a 12-10 upset of No. 18 Wheaton College in the tournament championship.
