SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (April 1, 2008) - Using a balanced scoring attack, the Springfield College women's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-4 victory over Mount Holyoke College this evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field.
It was the Pride's tenth straight win over the Lyons dating back to the 2000 season.
Thirteen players recorded points and 12 scored goals for Springfield, which outshot the hosts 33-14. Junior attacker Heather Dobson (Longmeadow, Mass.) and graduate student Rachel Lampros (Boxborough, Mass.) led the way with two goals and two assists apiece. The Pride also received a boost from sophomore midfielder Alexandra Bazzano (Newington, Conn), who notched a hat trick.
Sophomore midfielder Peggy Wefald (Granger, Ind./Penn) played a part in all four of Mount Holyoke's goals, scoring three and setting up the other. First year defender Clara Raugei (Alpharetta, Ga./Wesleyan School) was responsible for the Lyons fourth goal.
Springfield jumped out to a 3-0 edge just over ten minutes into the contest and led 5-1 following Bazzano's tally at the 15:26 mark. Wefald found the net twice over the next four minutes to slice the deficit to 6-3, but the Pride closed the half with four straight goals to push their cushion to 10-3 at the break.
The guests continued to roll in the second stanza, scoring eight unanswered goals over the first 20 minutes to put things out of reach.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren McAuley (Yorktown, N.Y.) stopped eight shots en route to her fourth win of the season for Springfield. Sophomores Mimi Henry (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) and Gabriela Cabido Carr (Brooklyn, N.Y.) split time in net for the Lyons, collecting five saves apiece.
Both squads are slated to resume league play on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (1-6, 0-2 NEWMAC) will travel to Wheaton College, while Springfield (5-3, 2-0 NEWMAC) will kick off a two-game homestand versus MIT.
