Clapp and Henry Named To Verizon All-Academic Team

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 29, 2003 – Springfield College junior Marisa Clapp was named to the 2003 Verizon Academic District I College Division Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country First Team, while senior Kelley Henry earned second-team honors.

As a first team academic all-district selection, Clapp moves on to the Academic All-America ballot for track and field/cross country. The team will be announced on June 19.

Clapp, who hails from Charlton, Mass., was a second-team Verizon Academic All-American in 2002. She placed seventh in the 1,500-meter event (4:32.98) at the NCAA Division III Championships last weekend, earning her fifth-career All-America title. Earlier in the season, Clapp was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Year after winning the 800, 1,500, and 5,000-meter events at the NEWMAC Track & Field Championships (April 27). In the fall, she finished 18th at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship (Nov. 23), and earned NEWMAC Runner-of-the-Year honors in women’s cross country for the second consecutive season. Clapp carries a 3.95 grade point average (g.p.a.) as a sports management major.

Henry, a native of Whitinsville, Mass., has a 3.94 g.p.a. in the applied exercise science major. Henry was a major contributor to both the cross country and track & field team. She placed 14th for the Pride at the NEWMAC Cross Country Championship (Nov. 2).

To be eligible for the Verizon Academic District I team, a student-athlete must play at a Division II or III institution based in New England or New York. The student-athlete must have a minimum 3.2 g.p.a. and be a starter or significant reserve on his team. The team is voted on by the sports information directors of those institutions.
