Springfield, Mass. - November 1, 2009 - After leading the football team to an impressive 47-26 win over Ithaca on Saturday afternoon, the duo of Jarred Burrell and Joe Myhren were honored by the Empire 8. Myhren was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, while Burrell was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week for the fourth occasion this year.Myhren,a product of New Hampton, N.Y. ran for a career-high 170 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries as SC picked up the crucial conference win. His 25-yard scoring run came 30 seconds into the game and he added a long of 38 yards. The junior halfback bettered his previous career-high set earlier this season by 20 yards.
Burrell continued to be an incredible weapon in the return game as the Warwick, R.I. native returned five kicks for 169 yards, including two huge returns to set up touchdowns in victory over the Bombers. He returned the opening kickoff 52 yards and two plays later, the Pride took a 6-0 lead. After the Bombers took a 20-13 lead, Burrell returned the kick 74 yards to the Ithaca 12-yard line and the Pride tied the game four plays later. He added four tackles, one pass break-up, and an interception to set up an early fourth quarter touchdown that gave Springfield a 40-26 lead.
Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 31st season as a head football coach in the fall of 2012. He enters his 29th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
