Baseball Sweeps NEWMAC Doubleheader, 2-0 and 8-5, Over MIT
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 25, 2005 – Springfield College senior left fielder
Mike Judge (Chatham, N.J.) went 3-for-5 with three doubles and four RBI in the second game of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball double-header as the Pride swept MIT, 2-0 and 8-5, this afternoon on Berry-Allen Field. The two victories clinched the SC the third seed for the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament, where the Pride will host sixth-seeded WPI on Thursday (April 28) in the first round at 4:00 p.m.
SC (16-13, 7-5 NEWMAC) trailed in the second game, 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh, before a RBI double by Judge and a two-run double by junior third baseman
Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) tied the game, 5-5. Senior designated hitter
Matt Basteri (Melrose, Mass.) plated senior catcher
Anthony Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) for the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to make the score, 6-5.
The Pride tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on RBI doubles by Judge and junior right fielder
Scott Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.) to make a winner out of sophomore reliever
Rob Smaldone (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and lead SC to its eighth-straight victory.
In the first game, senior
Kevin Davidson (Claremont, N.H.) picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing only two hits in six innings of work to lead the Pride to victory. Sophomore
Derek Hodder (Naugutuck, Conn) pitched an inning of scoreless relief to pick up his first save of the season.
SC scored both of its runs in the fifth inning after a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder
James Miner (Methuen, Mass.) that scored senior first baseman
John Beattie (Longmeadow, Mass.), and a RBI single by junior second baseman that drove in junior shortstop
Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mass.).
