Huntingdon, Pa. - February 16, 2013 - The Springfield College men's volleyball team rebounded from its first Division III loss of the season, grinding out wins over nationally-ranked New Paltz and Medaille on Saturday at the Juniata Invitational. The Pride defeated New Paltz 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 before rallying from a two-set deficit to knock off Medaille 23-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-7.
Springfield improved to 8-3 with the wins, while New Paltz, who entered the match ranked eighth in this week's national poll, dropped to 10-3. 12th-ranked Medaille dropped to 4-6 with the loss. Despite hitting .348 for the day, Springfield kept its opponents in the matches by committing 41 service errors.
Mike Pelletier had a tremendous day for the Pride, leading the way in both matches. In the win over New Paltz, the senior outside pounded 18 kills on 28 errorless attempts for a .643 hitting percentage. He added four digs, four blocks, and two aces, while classmate Greg Falcone added six kills, four aces, and four blocks. Mike Becker ran Springfield's offense to a .355 hitting percentage with 39 assists.
In the come-from-behind win over Medaille, Pelletier was again dominant. Just hours removed for totaling a career-best 24 kills against Juniata, Pelletier posted a new career-high of 25 kills at a .340 clip to go along with four blocks against the Mavericks.
However, head coach Charlie Sullivan had to go to his bench to pull out the victory. John Coen registered 14 kills, while hitting .524 from the right side, and Mike Freytag added four kills, four digs, and three blocks. Nick Ferry led Springfield with 10 digs, and Mike Becker was credited 55 assists, six digs, and three blocks as the Pride hit .344.
The Pride will play again at home on Friday when it hosts a tri-match with Elms at 4:00 pm and Wentworth at 7:00 pm.
