Marisa Clapp Tabbed NEWMAC's Top Runner
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 23, 2002 -- Springfield College junior
Marisa Clapp is the New England Women's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week.
This is the second time this season that Clapp, who hails from
Charlton, Mass., has been honored with a conference weekly award.
Clapp led the Pride at the seventh annual James Earley Invitational Saturday afternoon, covering the 6,000-meter course at Westfield's Stanley Park in a time of 21:15, just three seconds shy of the individual champion. Finishing second overall out of 272 runners, she was the top conference runner among seven competing schools. Clapp lifted SC to a sixth-place team finish out of 26 teams.

Jim Pennington enters his 28th season as head coach of the Springfield College women’s cross country and track and field teams in 2011-2012. Under Pennington’s direction, the Pride has recorded seven top 20 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and seven top 15 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
