The Pride received 10 of 14 first-place votes and topped the NEWA rankings with 133 points in this week's poll. The remainder of the poll reads as follows: Roger Williams (2 first-place votes; 122 points), Johnson & Wales (2 first-place votes, 113 points), Wesleyan (108 points), Williams (71), Rhode Island College (70), Southern Maine (39), Coast Guard (35), WPI (28), and Western New England (22). Others receiving votes included Norwich, Trinity, and Plymouth State.
Among individuals, three SC wrestlers were ranked No. 1 in the latest NEWA poll released today. They included senior Joe Grippi (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) at 141 lbs, senior Derrick Longo (Ardsley, N.Y.) at 165 lbs., and grad student John Gabordi (Ledyard, Conn.) at heavyweight.
In the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III team rankings (Jan. 7), Springfield appears in the 26th spot. Among individuals, Grippi is ranked 3rd nationally, while Longo is ranked 8th nationally.
Last weekend, the Pride finished first in the Scott Viera Invitational at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. SC had five wrestlers win their individual weight classes, including freshman Tyler Keane (Glastonbury, Conn.) at 125, Grippi at 141, Longo at 165, senior Mike Fish (Middletown, N.J.) at 174, and Gabordi at Hwt. As a team, SC scored 175.5 points to handily defeat seven other squads,
As a result of that tournament, the NEWA named Gabordi its Wrestler of the Week. Gabordi went 3-0 with two pins. In the finals, he defeated three-time conference finalist Tom Foote of Williams by pin in a time of 2:07.
Overall, Springfield had 10 wrestlers listed in the Top Six of the NEWA individual rankings this past week. They included Grippi (141), Longo (165), and Gabordi (Hwt.) all at No. 1. Junior Tom Casper (Bergenfield, N.J.) (125) and Fish (174) were at No. 2. Senior Joe Ortiz (Paramus, N.J.) (157) was at No. 3. Sophomore Derek Adams (Charlestown, R.I.) (133), junior Devin Biscaha (Jackson. N.J.) (157), and senior Jeremy Burns (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) (197) were all at No. 4. And senior Nick Camera (North Massapequa, N.Y.) (184) was at No. 5.
This Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 12-13), the SC wrestlers are competing in the National Duals in Springfield, Ill. They will meet #4 Augsburg, and either #5 Centenary (N.J.) or #13 Luther (IA) on Saturday.
