Baseball Splits Pair At Coast Guard In NEWMAC Opener
NEW LONDON, CONN.--Cory Anderson pitched a complete game scattering
four hits while striking out 12 as Coast Guard beat Springfield 7-1 in the
second game of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)
doubleheader to gain a split after the Pride won the first game 2-0 in eight
innings.
The opener was a classic pitchers dual between Coast Guard's Mike
Jarbeau and Springfield's Jon Davis. The game was scoreless thru seven
innings. The Bears had chances to score in both the sixth and seventh
innings but left two runners on in each inning.
Springfield finally got to Jarbeau in the eighth inning of this
scheduled seven inning game. Rory Pasini had a one-out single and Chris
Stack walked. Following a fielders choice for the second out, Jeff Hewes was
intentionally walked after the count got to 3-0 on him. Matt Basteri hit a
slow dribbler that just got past Jarbeau for an infield hit and second
baseman Brett Nichols threw the ball away allowing the second run to score.
Carl Longo came on in the eighth to retire the Bears in order to
pickup the save. Davis worked seven innings and scattered four hits while
walking three and striking out six to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Jarbeau (1-2) was the tough luck loser as he worked eight innings,
scattered five hits, allowed one earned run walked three and struck out
five.
In the second game, Springfield struck first in the top of the fifth
on an RBI single by Stack.
Coast Guard (7-3, 1-1) after being shutout for 12 straight innings
on the day, erupted for five runs in the fifth on four singles and three
walks. Nick Anderson and Lee Jones each had RBI singles while Aaron
Renschler walked with the bases load, Christian George got an RBI on a
ground out and Dave Stutt delivered a sacrifice fly as the Bears took a 5-1
lead.
Coast Guard scored twice more in the sixth on a two-run single by
Nick Anderson, who was 3 for 4 in the second game with three RBI's. Arena
was also 3 for 4 for the Bears in game two.
Cory Anderson walked just two while fanning 12 to improve to 3-0 on
the season.
Kevin Davidson took the loss for Springfield (5-3, 1-1).
