Wrestling Skyrockets to #10 Nationally, Rises to #1 in New England

Derrick Longo Springfield, Mass. -- January 25, 2012 -- The Springfield College wrestling team has risen to #10, up from #22, in the Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll. At the same time, the Pride has once again re-emerged as the No. 1 Division III wrestling team in New England.

Over the course of the past weekend, Springfield raced through its competition, winning the New England Wrestling Association Dual Team Meet Championship with victories over Bridgewater State, Williams, and Johnson & Wales. It was the first time SC had won this tournament since 2004, and its third title in this tourney overall. The site of the tournament was SC's Field House, the second time in three years it had been held at that venue.

As a result, Springfield jumped 12 spots to a #10 national ranking. SC now owns an 8-1 dual-meet record.

The latest New England Wrestling Association poll very simply used the placings in the team tournament. No voting took place.

Thus, the New England rankings were as follows -- 1) Springfield (8-1), 2) Johnson & Wales (12-3), Wesleyan (6-6), Southern Maine (11-5), 5) Roger Williams (5-3), 6) Rhode Island College (11-10), 7) Bridgewater State (5-10), 8) Western New England University (3-5), 9) Williams (4-10), 10) Trinity (3-7).

In the national poll, the rankings had Wartburg (IA) first with a 14-1 dual record. Wartburg was followed by 2) Augsburg (MN) (5-1), 3) Wisconsin-La Crosse (15-2), 4) Coe (IA) (6-2), 5) Ithaca (NY) (9-2), 6) Cornell (IA) (6-3), 7) Olivet (MI) (16-5), 8) St. John's (MN) (6-5), 9) Wisconsin-Whitewater (18-7), 10) Springfield (MA) (8-1).

The only other wrestling program ranked from New England was Johnson & Wales (12-3) at #28.

Individually, Springfield College was represented by a wrestler in all 10 weight classes in the New England Wrestling Association poll. All were ranked in the top four of their weight class. In fact, SC wrestlers were ranked #1 on four occasions. The four SC wrestlers ranked #1 in the region were junior Joe Grippi (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) at 141 pounds, senior Ryan McGilvray (Manalapan, N.J.) at 157 pounds, junior Derrick Longo (Ardsley, N.Y.) at 165 pounds, and junior Mike Fish (Middletown, N.J.) at 174 pounds.

On the national side, Grippi is now ranked eighth while Longo is 10th.

Back to New England, four more SC wrestlers are ranked #3 in the region. They are freshman Eric Hamrick (Collingswood, N.J.) at 149 pounds, junior Nicholas Camera (North Massapequa, N.Y.) at 184 pounds, junior Jeremy Burns (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) at 197 pounds, and senior John Gabordi (Ledyard, Conn.) at heavyweight.

And two more SC wrestlers are ranked #4 in the region. They are: sophomore Victor Ekpenyong (Middletown, Conn.) at 125 pounds, and freshman Derek Adams (Charlestown, R.I.) at 133 pounds.
