New London, Conn. - April 12, 2014 - The Springfield College men's track and field team posted a third-place finish in a tri-meet with Coast Guard and WPI on Saturday afternoon despite four first-place finishes.
Joe Taggart (Castleton, Vt.) posted a time of 16.70 in the 110 meter hurdles to place first in the event, while Dylan Peterson (Waterbury Center, Vt.) recorded a time of 59.77 in the 400 meter hurdles to take the top spot in the meet.
In the long jump. Springfield took the top two spots as freshman Alex Niemec (Chicopee, Mass.) finished first with a jump of 22-2.5, while classmate Jared Ombati (Manchester, N.H.) jumped a 20-5.75 to take second place.
Sophomore Brandon Hammerstrom (Auburn, N.H.) took first place in the shot put with a throw of 44-7.5 and Parker Ashton-Youngs (Tolland, Conn.) finished first in the javelin by a landslide, throwing a distance of 187-01. Michael Hiltz (Essex, Conn.) took second in the javelin with a 158-06.
Graduate student Ryan O'Connell (Middleboro, Mass.) finished second in the 800 meter race, posting a time of 1:59.40, while Sam Baker rounded out the Pride's top finishes jumping a 6-4 in the high jump.
The Pride will be back in action when they will host the Springfield College Invitational next Saturday, April 19, beginning at 11 a.m.
