Ponce Repeats as Ring Champion At West Point Open

Ryan Ponce West Point, N.Y. - January 18, 2014 - Senior Ryan Ponce (Tolland, Conn.) claimed the individual title on the still rings to highlight the second day of the West Point Open on Saturday evening for the Springfield College men's gymnastics squad.

This marks the second-straight year that Ponce claimed the championship in the still rings in the prestigious meet. He continues to be the only Springfield College gymnast to win an individual title in the 23-year history of the event.

Ponce posted a score of 15.300 to edge Trevor Howard (15.25) and Alexis Torres (15.20) from Penn State. Teammate Pat Hanley (Abington, Mass.) took home a fourth-place finish in the event with a score of 14.550.

Jon Zirna (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished in the top six in a pair of events to continue his early-season success. The sophomore placed fourth on the pommel horse after totaling a 13.500 and finished fifth on the parallel bars with a 13.650. Last evening, Zirna took fifth in the all-around competition with a score of 79.800.
