Springfield, Mass. -- September 7, 2008 -- Paced by senior All-American Jane Kelleher's (Chatham, Mass.) three goals, the Springfield College field hockey team cruised to the Zenaty Invitational crown after defeating Smith College, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Pride improve to 2-0 on the 2008 campaign, while the Pioneers drop to 1-1.
Meagan Dobson (Longmeadow, Mass.) opened up the scoring with 18:19 left in the first half off an assist from Meg Bradley's (Cumberland, R.I.). Just under two minutes later, Karah Heald (Bedford, N.H.) netted an unassisted tally. From then on, Kelleher took over as she scored all three of her goals in a 2:52 span en route to give the Pride a 5-0 lead after the first half of play.
Meghan Cole (Gloucester, Mass.) and Becca Gamble (Granby, Conn.) each registered scores in the second half for Springfield to complete the win.
Alison McCarthy (North Andover, Mass.) and Kelleanne Salazar (Granby, Conn.) combined to make five saves for Springfield.
For her stellar play on the weekend, senior Jill Urtz (Verona, N.Y.) was chosen as the Most Valuable Player. Joing Urtz on the all-tournament team was senior back, Katherine McCarthy (Conway, Mass.). The Pride return to action on Tuesday evening as it hosts Keene State on Stagg Field at 7:00 pm.
