Bryan Brown will enter his second season as the head men's cross country coach in the fall of 2012. After a year at the helm of the program, Brown has already made his impact after leading the Pride to a second-place team finish at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships last fall.Brown was named the head coach in the summer of 2011 as he returned to Springfield College, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in movement sciences in 1996 and a Master’s degree in health studies in 1998. A native of Ashburnham, Mass., Brown was a decorated student-athlete on the track and field team and earned All-America honors in 1996 when he placed fifth in the 1,500 at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
In his first season, Brown led the Pride to a second-place finish at the conference championships and a tremendous ninth-place showing at the NCAA Division III New England Regionals.
“Coach Brown brings to our cross country program a mix of accomplishments as a runner and coaching experience that makes him the ideal fit for our head coaching position,” said Dr. Schweitzer.
“I had a really positive experience as a student-athlete at Springfield College, and am really excited to be coming back in this new capacity,” explained Brown. “I am looking forward to helping create positive experiences for the student athletes in my program.”
Brown, who currently works at the Ludlow Community Center/Randall Boy’s & Girl’s Club as the Youth Athletic Director, has been actively involved in scholastic athletics since leaving Springfield College.
“I think what will make Bryan very successful with our student-athletes is that he understands both cross country and track and field,” described Springfield College men’s track and field coach Ken Klatka. “After running cross country at Springfield, he came out and ran track for me and developed into an All-American. He’s going to do great things here at Springfield.”
Brown has previously served as the Director of Athletics and Physical Education teacher at both Oakmont Regional High School and South Hadley High School. In addition to his duties as AD and teacher at those high schools, Brown also acted as the head track and field coach.
