Men's Track & Field Finishes Fourth At Division III New England Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 1, 2004 - Springfield Collegehosted the New England Women's Division III Track and Field Championships on Blake Track Saturday afternoon and the Pride finished fifth out of 28 scoring teams with 51 points. Williams won the event with 180 team points.

The Pride was led by freshman Cortney Birtwell (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Alisha Miner (Sanbornton, N.H.) who finished second and third in the 400-meter dash with times of 1:00.37 and 1:00.65, respectively.

Sophomore Meg Young (Hurley, N.Y.) also contributed with a fourth place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase clocking a time of 11:23.04.

The Pride’s 4x400 meter relay team ran to a third-place finish with a time of 4:05.39.

In the field events,senior Leyla Williams (Unionville, N.Y.) took home a third-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 152 feet, 6 inches. Sophomore Christina Davis placed third in the javelin (128 feet, 8 inches).

At the New England Men's Division III Championships at Williams College Saturday, SC earned a fourth-place finish with 65.5 points. Williams won the team title with 142.5 points.

Highlights included the performances of junior All-American Blake Gulino (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and freshman Chris Allen (Sandwich, Mass.) who finished first and second in the long jump with leaps of 23 feet, ¾ inches and 22 feet, 7 1/4 inches, respectively.

Junior All-American Justin Welch (Woburn, Mass.) placed third in the high jump (six feet, six inches). Allen finished tied for fourth after jumping six feet four inches.

Junior Matt Acciaioli (Warwick, R.I.) was second in the shot put (52 feet, 5 ½ inches).

SC 's 4x400 meter relay team of senior Art Fredricks (Wallingford, Conn.) , sophomore Chris Keyser (West Newbury, Mass.) , sophomore Bill King (Wilmington, Mass.) , and freshman Dave Forrette (Chicopee, Mass.) also finished in second place with a time of 3:17.51.
