SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 3, 2007 – Springfield College senior captains Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) and Lisa Thomas (Whitman, Mass.) scored five goals apiece as the Pride cruised past Mount Holyoke College, 19-6, in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s lacrosse play this evening at Benedum Field. Martell and Thomas also added assist totals of two and one, respectively, as the two combined for 13 total points of offense.
With the win, SC snaps a three-game skid and improves to 5-4 overall on the season and 1-1 in NEWMAC action. Mount Holyoke College drops to 2-5 overall on its campaign and 0-2 in the NEWMAC. The win improves the Pride to 14-3 lifetime against the Lyons.
SC sophomore attack Heather Dobson (Longmeadow, Mass.) contributed to the winning cause with three goals. Freshman attack Jennifer Zubkus (Dover, N.H.) chipped in with two scores, and senior attack Heidi Eidse (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) came off the bench to rack up five assists and one goal. In goal, freshman Lauren McAuley (Yorktown, N.Y.) improved to 4-4 on the year, making three saves and allowing just three goals in 36 minutes (35:45) of action.
Mount Holyoke was led by freshman midfielder Kristin Cody with three goals. First-year attack Megan Wefald scored twice and added an assist, as she now has 30 goals and five assists in just seven games played on the season. Freshman attack Mimi Blumenfeld added the other score for the Lyons.
The Pride will next travel to Cambridge, Mass., to face NEWMAC-foe MIT on Saturday afternoon, April 7th, in a 1:00 p.m. start.
