Baseball's Basteri Tabbed NEWMAC’s Top Player
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 19, 2004 – Springfield College’s
Matt Basteri is the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Week in baseball, announced today.
Basteri, a junior shortstop from
Melrose, Mass., led the Pride to a 4-0 week by hitting .533 with two home runs and eight RBI. He went 3-for-5 with two RBI in a 9-8 win over MCLA (April 12). In an 8-7 win over fourth-ranked Eastern Connecticut (April 16), Basteri drilled a three-run homer in the first inning to key a five-run opening frame. On Sunday (April 18), he was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI in a 12-4 win at Clark, then scored two runs and had an RBI as SC beat WPI, 8-6.
For the season, Basteri is hitting .347. The Pride is 7-8 overall and 5-7 in the conference. SC is the fifth seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament, and will play MIT, fourth seed, on Thursday in the opening round at 3:30 p.m.
