Springfield, Mass. - March 5, 2012 - The Springfield College wrestling team will have three members compete in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships this upcoming weekend in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Joe Grippi, Derek Longo, and Ryan McGilvray each won individual titles at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships to earn automatic berths to the national tournament.
This will Grippi's third-straight appearance at the NCAA Championships, while both Longo and McGilvray will be making their first appearance on the national level.
At the 133 pound weight class, Grippi is seeded sixth and enters with a 30-2 record this season. A native of Bedford Hills, N.Y., Grippi will take on The College Of New Jersey's Dan Herr in the first round. The winner will then wrestle the winner of third-seeded Adam Sheley (Wisconsin-La Crosse) and Alex Blank (Ursinus).
McGilvray has a record of 24-4 this year wrestling at the 157 pound weight class. The senior from Manalapan, N.J. will wrestle the winner of the Michael Letcher (Ohio Northern) and Chris Burdge (Centenary N.J.) bout. Burdge enters the competition as the No. 4 seed.
Seeded fifth at 165 pounds, Longo currently owns a 28-3 record in 2012. The Ardsley, N.Y. product will square off against Matt Burns from Augustana (IL) in his opening match. If he is able to win, he will battle the winner of the Nick Bach (Centenary N.J.) and fourth-seeded Joey Favia (Stevens) bout.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Jason Holder, all three wrestlers will be making a push to become Springfield College's first All-America wrestler since Elliot Smith achieved the feat in 2008.
