Baseball Keeps It Going With 6-4 Win Over Amherst
AMHERST, Mass., May 5, 2004 – Springfield College won for the 12th time in 15 outings on Tuesday, closing out the regular season with a 6-4 victory at Amherst College in a non-conference game.
The Pride, which beat the Lord Jeffs for the first time since 1994, improved to 15-11 overall. SC was 4-0 against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponents this season, and opens play in the ECAC Division III New England Tournament against Eastern Nazarene on Friday, May 7 at 3:30 p.m. in Quincy, Mass.
SC senior right-hander
Todd Royce (Chester, N.H.) hurled five innings to pick up his fourth win of the season against just one loss. Royce yielded one run and scattered five hits while striking out five. Junior
Brian Royal (Orange, Mass.) came out of the bullpen to hurl two shutout innings of relief.
Sophomore centerfielder
James Miner (Methuen, Mass.) ripped his team-high ninth home run of the season in the eighth inning. Sophomore designated hitter
Adam Tarquini (Fishkill, N.Y.) collected three hits with an RBI and a run scored, while classmate
Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior
Scott Houghton (East Longmeadow, Mass.) added two hits apiece.
SC drew first blood with three unearned runs in the second inning off Amherst starter Joe Vladeck. Rookie
Matt Sullivan (Springfield, Mass.) keyed the rally with a two-run single after an Amherst error extended the inning.
Amherst scored a run on two-out single by sophomore Dave Levinson in the third inning, but SC tacked on a run in each of the final three frames, highlighted by sophomore Miner's long ball in the top of the eighth inning.
Trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Amherst awoke from its slumber with a three-run blast by junior pinch-hitter Kyle Lavery. Levinson singled with two outs in the inning, bringing the tying run to the plate, but SC reliever
Robert Smaldone (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) worked out of the jam with a game-ending ground out.
