CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 22, 2004 -- Springfield College cruised to its fourth consecutive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship this weekend at MIT.
With 1,027.5 points, the Pride easily outdistanced second-place MIT (642) and Wellesley (558).
Conference champions included junior All-American
Megan Skinner (Acton, Mass.), who won the 500 freestyle (5:03.77, NEWMAC record) and the 200 backstroke (2:05.92, NEWMAC record); senior
Jessica Defoe (Monson, Mass.) in the 100 butterfly (59.06, NEWMAC record), and sophomore diver
Sara Tremblay (Agawam, Mass.) on the one-meter board (341.75).
SC dominated the competition in the relays, with Skinner and Defoe swimming legs on three championship teams. On SC's first-place 400-medley relay (4:01.93, NEWMAC record), Skinner and Defoe were joined by senior
Beth Byron (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore
Emily Phillips (North Windham., Conn.). Defoe, Skinner, Byron and sophomore
Alicia Hart (West Hartford, Conn.) picked up a conference title in the 200 medley relay (1:50.05), and Defoe, Skinner, Hart and Phillips won the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.79, a NEWMAC record).
All event winners earn first-team all-conference honors.

Diving Coach Peter Avdoulos

Peter Avdoulos is regarded as one of the top diving coaches in the nation, and is entering his 28th season as the diving coach for both the men's and women's programs in 2012-2013. The current NEWMAC Men's and Women's Diving Coach of the Year, Avdoulos has coached countless All-New England and All-American divers, as well as several National Champions.
