



Providence, R.I. - January 27, 2013 - The Springfield College wrestling team captured its second-straight New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Championship on Sunday at Johnson & Wales. Behind the efforts of John Gabordi, who was the named the Most Outstanding Wrestling, Springfield defeated Plymouth State, WPI, Johnson & Wales, and Wesleyan.The third-seeded Pride opened up the day with a 48-9 win over Plymouth State before shutting out WPI, 49-0. In the semifinals, Springfield knocked off second-seeded JWU, 24-10, before claiming the title in a thrilling 19-18 win over top-seeded Wesleyan. Wesleyan entered the competition ranked 10th in the latest national poll, while the Pride was 23rd.
Derrick Longo and Jeremy Burns each had three wins and added a forfeit victory. Gabordi was tremendous on the day, winning all three of his bouts, including the clinching 2-0 decision in the title match that gave Springfield the one-point win.

Jason Holder will enter his second season as head wrestling coach in 2012. Holder had a standout first season at the helm of the Pride, leading Springfield to the NEWA Duals Championship and taking three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships.
