Men's Track and Field Performs Well In Opening Day of ECAC Championships

Tom Brognano New York, N.Y. --March 4, 2011 -- Kevin Coyle of Springfield College led his men's track and field team to a fifth-place finish after one day of competition at the ECAC Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Armory in New York City. Competition will continue Saturday (Mar. 5) throughout the day.

The Pride scored 14 points and finds itself in fifth place of 31 scoring teams through the first day and seven events.

Coyle, a junior from Bradford, N.H., captured the triple jump with a leap of 14.65 meters or 48-feet, 3/4-inches. Coyle fouled on his first two attempts, and elected to pass on his sixth and final attempt. He accounted for 10 of SC's total of 14 points.

Springfield also scored four more points by finishing fifth in the 4x200 meter relay in a time of 1:29.95. That time actually broke the ECAC Division III Indoor record time of 1:30.17, which Springfield College had set on March 7, 2008. That 2008 foursome included Steve Headley, Nickel Hay, Matt Amendola, and Tim Rehm. The 2011 foursome included senior Tom Brognano (Rome, N.Y.), junior Kyle Brown (Concord, N.H.), senior Kevin Behlmer (Attleboro, Mass.), and Hay.

SC also competed in one more relay, the distance medley relay, finishing 11th with a time of 10:11.33. Competing for the Pride were senior Stephen Creamer (Seekonk, Mass.), senior Chris Quetant (Milford, Conn.), senior Troy French (Antrim, N.H.), and sophomore Ryan O'Connell (Middleboro, Mass.).
