Men's Lacrosse Ranked No. 15 In Preseason Poll
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Dec. 18, 2003 – The Springfield College men’s lacrosse team was ranked No. 15 in the first preseason poll, released December 11 by
Lacrosse Magazine.
Last spring, the Pride won its third Pilgrim Lacrosse League Championship and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in four years. SC compiled an 11-5 record, including an unblemished 6-0 league mark, falling at eventual national runner-up Middlebury, 11-9, in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
“This could be one of the deepest teams I’ve ever coached,” said 21st-year head coach
Keith Bugbee, one of only four active coaches with over 200 wins. “We have great leadership from our senior class and a lot of experience from our juniors.
SC returns the top-12 scorers on an attack that finished the 2003 season ranked sixth nationally in scoring offense (14.88 gpg) and fifth in scoring margin (7.06 gpg). Sophomore forward
Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.), who garnered several post-season honors including Honorable Mention All-Amerca and Pilgrim League Player and Rookie of the Year recognition, is back after leading the Pride with 76 points (47 goals, 29 assists).
All-Conference senior captain
Paul Purdy (Brewster, N.Y.) finished second for Springfield with 63 points (38 goals, 25 assists), while junior
Dan Blinn (Longmeadow, Mass.) was the Pride’s third leading scorer with 43 points (32 goals, 11 assists).
Springfield will be tested early in 2004, opening the campaign on March 6th versus No. 4 Washington College in a game to be played at Fairfield University. SC then travels to Hartwick (N.Y.) College on Saturday, March 13th before returning home for a rematch with No. 3 Middlebury on Wednesday, March 17th and a showdown with No. 2 SUNY Cortland on Saturday, March 20th.
