Field Hockey Downs Wheaton, 2-1, In NEWMAC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 01, 2003 – Springfield College sophomore midfielder
Sarah Brooker (Auburn, Maine) notched a goal and the game-winning assist to lead the top-seeded Pride to a 2-1 win over eight-seeded Wheaton College in the first round of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Tournament this afternoon at Benedum Field.
Brooker got the scoring started with a goal 11 minutes into the game off a feed from senior midfielder
Julie Winslow (West Falmouth, Mass.). Brooker then assisted sophomore
Lisa Fruggiero (East Dennis, Mass.) on the game-winning goal with 15:59 left in the first half. It was Fruggiero’s first tally of the season.
Wheaton junior forward
Melissa Busfield (Gloucester, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Lyons with 11:52 remaining in the game. Wheaton ends the season with a record of 8-12.
SC junior goalkeeper
Lindsay Pardue (Houston, Texas) made seven stops in net.
The Pride (13-8) will host the semifinals and finals of the NEWMAC Tournament next weekend (Nov. 8-9) at Benedum Field.
