Brian Royal Named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 3, 2002 – Springfield College freshman right-hander Brian Royal was selected as the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rookie of the Year in baseball.
Teammates Toby Cole and Rick Armstrong were named to the NEWMAC All-Conference team.
Royal, who hails from Orange, Mass., had an outstanding first season in the Maroon & White. He was dominant in conference regular-season action, registering a 3-0 mark with a 2.37 earned-run average. Royal led the Pride in victories with a 4-2 record to go along with a 4.72 earned-run average. He made six starts this season, had two complete games and struck out 24 in 34.1 innings.
Armstrong, a native of West Hartford, Conn., was SC’s workhorse on the mound this season. The junior right-hander pitched a team-high 54 innings, posting a 3-4 record with a 4.08 earned-run average. Armstrong led the Pride in starts (eight) and complete game (five).
Cole, who is from Blue Hill, Maine, was an All-New England selection as freshman last season. The sophomore shortstop led the Pride in hits (41) and total bases (58), and ranked second in batting average (.331), runs scored (23), doubles (eight), home runs (three) and slugging percentage (.468).

Mark Simeone will enter his 17th season as the head baseball coach at his alma mater in 2013 . The reigning NEWMAC Coach of the year is coming off a successful 2012 campaign in which the Pride went 20-15.
