



Springfield, Mass. -- October 14, 2009 -- For the third straight week, the Springfield College football team has been ranked No. 2 in New England Division III. The Pride still trails No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Trinity, now 3-0.Mike DeLong's troops have won two in a row following its 39-14 victory over Husson University last Saturday at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. SC is now 4-1 on the season, and will meet Mount Ida in Newton Centre, Mass. this Saturday (Oct. 17) at 1 pm.
The top four ranked teams remain the same from a week ago. Trinity (3-0) received 13 of the 15 first-place votes and a total of 146 points to retain the top spot. Springfield placed second with one first-place vote and 130 total points. Plymouth State (5-1) captured the lone remaining first-place vote and 120 points to stay third. And Amherst (3-0) is still fourth with 104 points.
In fifth, moving up three spots, is Williams (2-1) with 81 points. The bottom five looks like this. In sixth is Curry (4-2) with 66 points. In seventh is Maine Maritime (4-1) with 50 points. There is a tie for eighth between Bridgewater State (4-2) and Fitchburg State (4-2) with 34 points. (Springfield defeated Fitchburg State, 55-7, back in both teams' openers on September 5.) And in 10th, having dropped five spots, is WPI (3-3) with 27 points.

Michael C. “Mike” DeLong ’74 enters his 32nd season as a head football coach in the fall of 2013. He enters his 30th year at Springfield College alone. For the past 28 years, he has been the head coach at Springfield, his alma mater. Mike had also been the head coach at Maine Maritime in Castine, Maine in 1979 and 1980. Read more.
