Springfield College Athletics Kicks off 2009 Fall Season

Opening Weekend of Fall Sports at Springfield College Springfield, Mass. - August 31, 2009 - The Springfield College athletic year kicks off this week in impressive fashion as it hosts a trio of tournaments for its defending New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Champion women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, and field hockey teams on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Sept. 4-6).

For complete tournament dates, times, and pairings, please see below.

The action will begin on Friday evening as the women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams each play their first contests of the 2009 season. The women’s soccer team will take on Westfield State at 5:00 pm at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex, while the women’s volleyball team will battle Lasell at 5:00 pm and Westfield State at 7:00 pm in Blake Arena.

Saturday will prove to be one of the most action-packed days of athletics on Springfield’s campus this year as there will be women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, field hockey, and football games all at home.

The women’s volleyball team will play Roger Williams at 10:00 am to start the day and will take on Brandeis at 3:00 in the afternoon. The field hockey team plays the opening game of the Zenaty Invitational against local-rival Western New England at 11:00 am. Depending on results from Friday evening’s games, the women’s soccer team will play at either 5:00 pm in the consolation game or at 7:00 pm in the championship game on Saturday against either Utica or Eastern Connecticut State.

Under the lights at Stagg Field, the football team will also square off against visiting Fitchburg State in its season opener at 7:00 pm. Coming off a 4-6 record, the Pride will look to sophomore quarterback Josh Carter to lead the way for another season against some of the top competition in the region.

In addition, the men’s soccer team will start off the year on Saturday afternoon just down the road at Western New England College where it will take on Husson in the Soccer City Shootout. The Pride will lean on NSCAA All-New England selection John Plourd this season to make a run at a conference title.

Sunday’s action will conclude the weekend as the Zenaty Invitational wraps up with the consolation game at 11:00 am, followed by the championship tilt at 1:00 pm.

For the fifth consecutive season, the Springfield College field hockey team was crowned NEWMAC champions and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last fall. This year, the Pride will look to continue its dominant stretch with a more balanced attack of talented veteran players. In the midfield, NFHCA Division III New England East Region Second Team honoree Morgan Rein will lead the charge. Rein started all 23 games last season and totaled nine points for the Pride.

Rattling off a 32-5 record a year ago, the women’s volleyball team returns a great deal of experience as it looks to stay atop the conference ranks. Emerging as one of the top players in the region during her first year after transferring from the University of Delaware, NEWMAC Player of the Year Heather Lively will lead the Pride once again this season. The junior outside hitter totaled 523 kills last season en route to AVCA Division III Honorable Mention All-American honors.

Having spent nearly all of last season ranked as one of the top 25 teams in the country, the Pride women's soccer team has its eyes set on repeating as NEWMAC Champions and returning to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five years. Leading the way will be a handful of underclassmen as well as several key veterans. Jen Jahoda is the team’s leading returning scorer as she tallied 17 points as a freshman last season.
