Women's Lacrosse Takes Down Wellesley, 15-7

Springfield, Mass. - April 13, 2013 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team picked up an important conference win on Saturday morning as it defeated Wellesley College, 15-7, on Stagg Field in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown.

Springfield boosts its record to 8-6, 3-2 in league play, while the Blue even its record at 6-6, 1-3 in conference action.

For Springfield, Connie Nielsen tallied four goals, while Michelle Dorsey and Kelly Gallo each recorded hat tricks. Meghan Flangan recorded two goals and an assists, and Jennifer Thomas picked up four ground balls. Anne Versprille was solid between the pipes, registering 11 saves.

Brit Mscisz led Wellesley with four goals, while Meredith Roy snagged a game-high five draw controls. Claire Canty tallied a goal, an assist, and three draw controls, and Tya Logan was credited with seven saves in the loss.

The Pride netted the first two goals of the game on unassisted strikes from Nielsen and Flanagan in the opening 9:06 of the game.

Mscicz answered 21 seconds after Flanagan’s marker with an unassisted goal of her own before Springfield built a comfortable lead with the game’s next four goals. The Pride took advantage of three free-position goals, including two from Dorsey and another from Flanagan, to go along with a tremendous shot from Gallo that stung the top right corner to own a 6-1 advantage with 6:54 to play. Wellesley tacked on the final goal of the first half, with Mscicz converting a Allison Robbins feed towards the crease with 1:43 on the clock.

Neilsen buried two goals in the first 2:29 of the second half as Springfield's lead grew to 8-2. However, Wellelsey answered with goals from Roy and Mscisz to creep within four, forcing the Pride into a timeout.

Out of the break, Springfield seized control for good, scoring four unanswered and six of the game's next seven goals, en route to a 14-5 lead with 5:04 on the clock. Five different players found the back of the cage in the spurt, with Colleen Keeley's goal capping off the surge.

Mscisz and Robbins sandwiched another Gallo goal in the final 4:30 to wrap up the day's scoring.

The Prie finished the game with a 30-23 edge in shots, while both team won 12 draws. Springfield committed just eight turnovers in the contest, compared to the Blue's 16.

Springfield will play its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday evening when it hosts Connecticut College at 6:00 pm.
