South Hadley, Mass. -- April 23, 2011 -- Jackie Moscardelli scored four goals and Meagan Dobson added three goals and three assists to lift the Springfield College women's lacrosse team to a 17-2 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference victory over Mount Holyoke this afternoon at the Turf Field under rainy skies. The win allowed SC to finish the NEWMAC regular season unbeaten at 6-0.
The Pride is now 10-5 overall. Mount Holyoke is now 5-9 overall, 2-4 in league play.
Springfield was paced by Dobson, a senior attacker from Longmeadow, Mass., who racked up three goals and three assists. Moscardelli, a junior midfielder from Weymouth, Mass. found the back of the net four times, while sophomore midfielder Meghan Flanagan (Averill Park, N.Y.) added two goals and a pair of helpers.
The Pride tallied the first six goals of the game and led 8-2 at the break. They then outscored Mount Holyoke 9-0 in the second half to seal things.
Springfield finished with edges in shots (35-10), draw controls (12-9) and ground balls (26-17). First year goalkeeper Anne Versprille (Franklin, Mass) made six saves en route to her 10th win of the year. At the other end, sophomore Jamie Theophilos (Hinsdale, Ill.) turned away 11 shots for the hosts.
Senior Vika Planson (New Gloucester, Maine) and junior midfielder Hilary Bombard (Northampton, Mass.) recorded goals for the hosts.
Springfield (10-5, 6-0 NEWMAC) has clinched the top seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament and will host both semifinal games, as well as the championship game at Stagg Field. Mount Holyoke's postseason fate will be determined by the results of the contest between MIT and Wheaton College, which was postponed due to inclement weather conditions today. The tournament is slated to begin with a Quarterfinal Round game on Wednesday
