CORTLAND, N.Y. - October 5, 2008 - Senior Sam Spehler scored off a pass from junior Lauren Eichenberger 26 seconds into the second half as Cortland, ranked 12th nationally in Division III, edged 17th-ranked Springfield College, 1-0, in a non-league matchup.

Senior Stacy Billings made two saves, one in each half, to record the shutout for the Red Dragons (8-1). Freshman goalie Alison McCarthy (North Andover, Mass.) turned away seven shots, all in the first 35 minutes, for the visiting Pride (6-4).

Eichenberger sent a crossing pass into the circle from the right side in the opening moments of the second half. Spehler got her stick on the pass and sent a slow roller that found its way just inside the left post.

Cortland pressured Springfield in the first 10 to 15 minutes of the game, but McCarthy made most of her saves during that stretch and the Red Dragons weren't able to get shots off on other scrambles in front of the cage.

Neither team had great scoring opportunities following Spehler's goal. Springfield did get off a pair of shots with about 23 minutes remaining, one that was deflected wide right and the other saved by Billings.

Cortland finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots, 9-1 in the first half. The Red Dragons also earned eight penalty corners to Springfield's six.
