Baseball Advances With 2-1 Win Over WPI
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 24, 2003- Springfield College sophomore right-hander
Brian Royal (Orange, Mass.) scattered seven hits and allowed just one run as the Pride defeated WPI, 2-1, in the first round of the 2003 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament at Berry-Allen Field.
The Pride advances to face MIT on Saturday, April 26, at 11:00 a.m. at Babson College in the conference tournament, which now goes to a double-elimination format.
Royal improved to 4-1 with his third complete game of the season. Senior
Brian Puchalski (South Deerfield, Mass.) collected two hits in the win.
SC junior shortstop
Toby Cole (Blue Hill, Maine) went 3-for-4, and drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning. With SC leading, 1-0, with one out in the seventh, senior center fielder
Dan Abrahamson (South Deerfield, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior second baseman
Dan Samia (North Adams, Mass.). Cole’s single brought Abrahamson home with what proved to be the decisive run.
WPI senior left-hander
Matt Clark (Auburn, Mass.) was the hard luck loser. He hurled a complete game, giving up two earned runs in eight innings.
