Springfield, Mass. -- November 11, 2011 -- The Beacons of UMass-Boston won the first match of the 2011 NCAA Division III New England Women's Volleyball Regional today at Springfield College's Blake Arena. UMass-Boston defeated NYU-Polytechnic by a score of 3-0. Set scores were 25-19, 25-13, 25-23.
UMass-Boston thus advances, raising its record to 27-4, while NYU-Polytechnic ends its season at 23-15.
The Beacons, as the #2-seed, will move on to face the winner of #3-seeded Bowdoin vs. #6-seeded Baruch on Sunday at 3:30 pm. The Bowdoin-Baruch match will be up next this afternoon at 3 pm..
UMB cruised through the first two sets, winning 25-19, 25-13. The third set, however, proved more difficult as the Beacons did not take control until they took a 21-20 lead.
Shannon Thompson led UMB with 10 kills. She also finished with 11 digs. Kirsten Morrison and Molly Rattigan each ended with nine kills. Morrison had a superb match with nine kills and no errors in 13 attempts for a team-best .692 hitting percentage.
Rattigan was not far behind with nine kills and only two errors in 20 attempts. Another who had a very good match was Corrine Porter with a team-best 14 digs and a .273 hitting percentage with six kills and no errors in 22 swings.
Cassy Hanneman ran the UMB show with 37 set assists.
For NYU-Polytechnic, the #7-seed, Victoria Kalvert led her squad with 12 kills. Alexis Walker finished with eight kills and only two errors in 17 attempts for a .353 hitting percentage. Corey Loupee finished with 28 set assists and two service aces.
Nicole Breitbart finished with 14 digs. She was followed by Melissa Pona with nine digs, and Rebecca Eaker with seven digs. As a team, UMB had a good hitting percentage of .316, holding NYU-Polytechnic to .135.
Following Bowdoin-Baruch, later on today, #4-seeded Tufts will take on #5-seeded Roger Williams at 5:30 pm, followed by #1 Springfield versus #8 Westfield State.
